The Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF), a 17-acre site operating as Covanta Long Beach Renewable Energy, began commercial operation in July 1988. It serves the City of Long Beach and the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. The facility processes up to 1,380 tons of municipal solid waste per day, generating up to 36 megawatts (MW) or enough to power 35,000 homes. The facility also recycles approximately 10,000 tons of ferrous (steel) metals each year.
